Western fire volunteers head east along I-45 toward Las Vegas.

"This is going to be the epicenter of the fire, because Las Vegas has so much history in the air," said Kevin Jones, fire district spokesman.

Las Vegas Boulevard is closed between U.S. 35 and I-15 because of the wildfire.

"As we were leaving U.S. 35, I saw a lot of fire trucks heading north into the desert," said resident Jina Sexton.

Jones said flames have reached the city's north side where a number of homes were destroyed earlier this week, and fire crews are on high alert.

Firefighters have been at the scene of the blaze on Wednesday afternoon.

In order to evacuate, evacuees should go to Clark County, about 12 miles away.

Fire officials say the city has lost all its power.

Fire officials had reported heavy smoke on all sides of downtown, including the city limits.

Residents in both Las Vegas and Reno are being evacuated in order to make way for firefighters and medical personnel.

Jones told 9NEWS that it is the largest wildfire since 1996.

Officials have not said yet exactly where or how many homes have been destroyed, but it is widely believed to be in the Las Vegas area.

"We think there are maybe several thousand destroyed," Jones said. "We have received reports of multiple homes burned by the time we get in."

About 1,000 people have been evacuated across the region.

The National Weather Service says it is forecast to be an extremely hot day Friday, possibly into Saturday.

Dozens of road closures have been placed for the Las Vegas area.

The road closures include Interstate 12, I-15 near the airport in Nevada, I-17 north of Las Vegas and several roadways within the region.
